SUMMER READING
Eastview’s Summer Reading Program 2010
June 9 thru July 23
Students and Parents:
It’s time for Eastview’s Summer Reading Program! Reading is the key to academic success, and since practice makes perfect--let’s practice!
Using Book Adventure, children will create their own book lists from over 7,000 recommended titles, take multiple choice quizzes on the books they've read, and earn points and prizes for their literary successes.
We have been going over all the details here at school, and we have been explaining just what is expected. Here are some details:
- • Students have begun to look up book titles that they are interested in.
- • They will read these books at home, and take a corresponding comprehension quiz online. They can take the quiz at Eastview, at home or anywhere else that has an online connection.
- • If a computer is not available for your child to use at home, come to school to use our computers, or go to the Eastgate Branch of the Algonquin Library. Even while on vacation, students can access the website anywhere in the world!!
- • Student point goals are mentioned below.
- • Students should make sure that they don’t choose a book that is too difficult for them. They should pick a book from the grade level they just completed, or next year’s.

What is the Book Adventure?
Book Adventure is a free resource that was created in response to the staggering percentage of students reading below grade level in the United States. Clearly, young people should read more -- Book Adventure makes them want to read more. Leading literacy experts conclude that it is not enough to teach children to read; children must choose to read independently if they are to become versatile, engaged, lifelong readers. Current studies suggest that for students to succeed in today's society, we must incorporate technology into the learning process.
Using Book Adventure, young readers not only receive the intrinsic satisfaction of reading a book and demonstrating their comprehension through short quizzes, but also earn rewards for reading and demonstrating comprehension of the books they've read. Research has shown that providing extrinsic incentives can build a love of reading that lasts a lifetime. Book Adventure is the first web-based organization dedicated exclusively to motivating children to read using a technology platform.
It's time for a . . . BOOK ADVENTURE !
Here is how to get started! Just follow these easy steps:
- • Log on to: www.bookadventure.org
- • Individual student accounts can be accessed by entering user name and password. USE NEW LOGIN
- • Mrs. Stephenson will be available to answer questions before the school year is over and from June 15 - 23. She will be here throughout the summer on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 7:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Mr. Z will be here as well. Only books included on the list should be selected, whether at the grade level just completed, or next year’s.
- • Students are then to read the entire book at home using the strategies they have learned in school. They are not reading only for completion, but for meaning!
- • When they are finished reading, they are to go to the Kid Zone and click on the Quiz-O-Matic to take a reading quiz, usually consisting of five or ten questions. If they do not pass the quiz, don’t get discouraged. Just have them re-read the book, or review the contents paying close attention to the story elements of characters, setting, main idea, and the author's purpose, and try again. There are, however, only two opportunities to take the quiz. After that, please come to school and see Mr. Z or Mrs. Stephenson.
- • Once the quiz is successfully completed, they are ready to go on a new Book Adventure! To find a new book, they are to sign in and click “Go” to access the KID ZONE. Here they can search the Book Finder to select a book of interest at their reading level.
- • This reading program is a requirement for all students at Eastview. Reading is the key to future academic success. As parents and educators, it is our responsibility to make sure they are ready, not only for the next year, but the rest of their academic career.
- • This program also aligns with the goals of District 300’s Strategic Plan, which calls for increased rigor in classrooms. Summer reading is one way to increase knowledge and comprehension skills. The Strategic Plan can be viewed online at the District 300 website.
Kindergarten and First Grade Parents Only
What do I do if my son or daughter is NOT an independent reader?
- • Read the story to your child.
- • Have your child retell the story back to you.
- • Finally, go to www.bookadventure.org and find the corresponding quiz. Read the questions to your child and have them tell you what the answers should be.
Need an Incentive???????
Students who meet their summer reading goal will:
- • Be in invited to walk in the Founders’ Days Parade with the Eastview Float!! (July 24)
- • Be invited to the summer pool party at the Algonquin pool!! (July 31)
- • One student in each grade level, plus another 10 readers, will be invited to go to the pool in August with Mr. Z DURING SCHOOL!!
Upon completion of the reading requirements, students will receive a certificate, together with all the information about these incentives.
What’s the Catch??
Students must use the new login that has been created for them. We will not be aware if a student meets their point goal unless they use the new login information. They must read books at their grade level to earn credit and should not be reading books they have read before.
FINALLY
We would love to see students come in over the summer to take a quiz or tell Mr. Z about their favorite book. Mrs. Stephenson will be here too. She will be in the library on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to ask. Together we can help your child make great gains in their literacy growth that will motivate them to discover an exciting world through literature.
Don’t forget to enroll in other summer reading programs!! Many area outside reading programs just ask for an accumulation of minutes, so minutes read can count for other programs too!!
Please contact us if we can be of any help. Good luck and have fun!!
